LENNART VERHAGEN

I am an Assistant Professor at the Donders Institute, Centre for Cognition, of the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

I develop new non-invasive brain stimulation techniques to modulate neural circuits. I'm working on novel ultrasound neuromodulation techniques to alter brain areas with high precision, especially areas deep in the brain, such as the amygdala and caudate. I also extend more conventional approaches, for example I use paired-associative TMS approaches to couple or uncouple specific cortical connections supporting decision making. I work closely together with Prof Matthew Rushworth and Dr Jérôme Sallet

Between 2016 - 2019 I was a senior research associate in the lab of Matthew Rushworth at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging and Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford.

From 2014 to 2016 I was a Marie Curie research fellow jointly in the Decision and Action Lab and the Cognitive Neuroecology Lab of dr. Rogier Mars at the University of Oxford. I used MR neuroimaging techniques to compare the neuroanatomy of the monkey, ape and human brain, testing which connections are shared, and which are uniquely human. This cross-species approach is vital, not only to understand the evolution of the human brain, but also to bridge pre-clinical and clinical work.

Between 2012 and 2014 I have studied the neural mechanisms and neuroanatomy of human communication. I worked as a postdoc in the Neurobiology of Language group led by  prof. dr. Peter Hagoort and the Intention & Action group headed by prof. dr. Ivan Toni at the Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging of the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and BehaviourRadboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

I obtained my PhD in 2012 working with prof. dr. Ivan Toni and prof. dr. Chris Dijkerman (Experimental PsychologyHelmholtz InstituteUtrecht University). Using a large variety of neuroimaging and neuromodulation techniques I studied how conceptual and perceptual information is incorporated in an action plan.
