LENNART VERHAGEN

Lennart VerhagenI am a postdoctoral research fellow in the Decision and Action Laboratory headed by prof. dr. Matthew Rushworth at the Department of Experimental Psychology of the University of Oxford. I study the anatomy and function of the human brain. I specifically focus on our human ability of insight: we can quickly grasp the hidden relationships that structure the world around us. From August 2014 to August 2016 I was a Marie Curie research fellow jointly in the Decision and Action Lab and the Cognitive Neuroecology Lab of dr. Rogier Mars at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. I carefully compared the anatomy of the monkey, ape and human brain, testing which connections are shared, and which are uniquely human.

In early 2014 I investigated the neuroanatomy supporting our human language faculty, focussing specifically on the relatively unexplored temporal lobe of the human brain. In collaboration with the University of Oxford, I worked as a postdoc in the Neurobiology of Language group led by  prof. dr. Peter Hagoort at the Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (DCCN) of the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and BehaviourRadboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

Between 2011 and 2013 I have studied the neural mechanisms of human communication. I worked as a postdoc in the Intention & Action group headed by prof. dr. Ivan Toni at the DCCN, Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

I finished my PhD in 2011 working on a collaborative project under the supervision of prof. dr. Ivan Toni and prof. dr. Chris Dijkerman(Experimental PsychologyHelmholtz InstituteUtrecht University). In the context of this project I studied how conceptual and perceptual information is incorporated in an action plan.
